Conference with ONS: From Jamaica to the roots of the world

Dive into the captivating world of Dub, this musical movement born in the early 1970s in Jamaica, at the crossroads of reggae, Rasta culture and the pioneering sound experiments of legendary figures such as King Tubby, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Augustus Pablo. Through a historical and cultural journey, this conference traces the evolution of Dub, from its Jamaican roots to its many contemporary offshoots: digital Dub, UK Stepper, Ragga Jungle, Roots or even fusions with hip-hop, dancehall and current electronic scenes. Rare and immersive video extracts (King Jammy, Mad Professor, Horace Andy with Massive Attack, etc.) will illustrate this sonic odyssey, passing through the birth of sound systems, the mutations of the genre in the United Kingdom, and the emergence of a flourishing international scene, notably driven by artists such as Tippy I Grade, Pachyman, Iration Steppas, Youthie or Iseo & Dodosound, and by major Dub festivals in Europe and Latin America. But this conference is also intended to be eco-sensitive, echoing the spirit of the DubEco Festival: it will explore Rastafari values, the link between music, earth and spirituality, “good vibrations” as a way of life, and the role of Dub in a quest for reconnection — to oneself, to others, and to nature.

Live Mix + Soundsystem

Hosted by ONS and friends.🎛️ Live Dub Mixer · Multi-instrumentalist · Ethnomusicologist 🎛️Ons Barnat is a producer, composer, and professor-researcher based in Montreal. From Reunion Island to Colombia, Belize, and New Zealand, he has performed and recorded in more than 15 countries. As a multi-instrumentalist musician (keyboards, guitar, bass, French horn, melodica, percussion), he has accompanied on stage many local artists as well as international reggae figures such as Queen Omega, Luciano, Marcia Griffiths, Leroy Sibbles, Roots Daughters, Jah Observer, Richie Spice, Lutan Fyah, Warrior King or Chezidek. Passionate about reggae and roots music, in 2025 he created the O·N·S & Friends: Live Dub Experience project, a living laboratory where original compositions, improvisation and live mixing meet on stage. Through the Oneness Nomadik Studio (O·N·S), he develops a nomadic and immersive sound universe, merging his background as a globetrotting ethnomusicologist with an artisanal approach to live dub. In his sets, he mixes his own productions live, joined by a team of musicians and singers, in search of a vibrant and organic sound – a call to travel, unity and dub trance.
